SmartReader Plus 9 - Two-Channel Pulse Logger

The SmartReader Plus 9 (SRP-9) is a two-channel pulse and event data logger designed to count and record switch contact closures and DC voltage pulses over time. It is ideal for applications where activity, frequency, or totalized events matter more than continuous analog measurements. The SRP-9 is commonly used to log flow meter pulses, equipment run events, rotational speed (RPM), wind speed, rainfall tips, and other pulse-based signals generated by switches or electronic outputs. Each channel independently counts events during a user-defined sampling interval, creating a time-stamped record that can be analyzed to understand usage patterns, rates, and trends. With selectable fast and slow inputs, wide voltage compatibility, and long-term battery operation, the SRP-9 is a proven solution for reliable, unattended pulse logging in field and industrial environments.

Key Features

The SmartReader Plus 9 (SRP-9) is a two-channel pulse and event data logger designed to count and record switch contact closures and DC voltage pulses over time. Rather than measuring continuous analog values, the SRP-9 records discrete events, making it well suited to applications where activity, usage, or frequency must be tracked and analyzed.

Each channel independently counts incoming pulses during a user-defined sampling interval and stores the total count with a time stamp. This approach allows users to evaluate rates, totals, and patterns of activity without requiring continuous high-speed data capture.

The SRP-9 supports both dry contact inputs (such as relay or reed switch closures) and active logic-level pulse signals, providing flexibility when interfacing with common sensors, meters, and control outputs.

How Pulse Counting Works

The SmartReader Plus 9 continuously monitors each input channel and increments an internal counter whenever a valid pulse or contact closure is detected. At the end of each sampling interval, the total number of pulses counted during that interval is recorded in memory.

Each channel can record up to 4,095 pulses per sampling interval. The maximum allowable pulse rate therefore depends on the selected interval. If the number of pulses exceeds this limit during an interval, the recorded value is capped at 4,095.

Selectable fast and slow input modes allow the logger to accommodate a wide range of pulse widths, from mechanical switch closures to higher-speed electronic pulse outputs.

Typical Applications

The SmartReader Plus 9 is commonly used in applications where sensors or systems produce pulse-based outputs that represent real-world events or activity levels, including:

Flow and volume monitoring
Counting pulse outputs from water, gas, or air flow meters to track consumption, verify system operation, or identify changes in flow behavior over time.

Equipment runtime and cycle counting
Logging relay or switch closures from pumps, compressors, fans, motors, or other machinery to measure run time, start counts, or duty cycles.

Rotational speed and motion monitoring
Recording pulses from proximity sensors, optical sensors, or encoders to analyze shaft rotation, RPM trends, or mechanical activity.

Environmental event monitoring
Counting tipping-bucket rain gauge events or anemometer pulses to quantify rainfall or wind activity over defined intervals.

Traffic and occupancy counting
Counting vehicles or pedestrians using pulse or contact-closure outputs from pneumatic road tubes, inductive loop detectors, infrared beam sensors, gates, or turnstiles. The SRP-9 is suited to traffic-volume and pattern analysis where each event generates one or more pulses and overall counts per sampling interval remain within the logger’s capacity.

Setup and Data Collection

The SmartReader Plus 9 is configured and read using TrendReader® software. Users select the sampling interval, input mode, and channel configuration, then verify operation using real-time readings before deployment.

Once installed, the logger operates unattended, storing time-stamped pulse counts in non-volatile memory. Data can be downloaded to a PC for analysis, reporting, or archival purposes.

Application Considerations

The SmartReader Plus 9 is optimized for event counting and trend analysis. It is not intended for applications requiring pulse-by-pulse waveform capture, vehicle classification, or extremely high-frequency counting beyond the per-interval limits of the logger.

Selecting an appropriate sampling interval is essential to ensure accurate results and avoid exceeding maximum counts during any given interval.

Q&A

How is pulse counting different from measuring a signal continuously?

Pulse counting focuses on events, not waveforms. The SRP-9 does not sample or store individual pulse shapes. Instead, it counts how many valid pulses occur within each sampling interval. This makes it efficient for long-term monitoring, but unsuitable for applications that require pulse-by-pulse timing or waveform analysis.

How do I choose the right sampling interval?

The sampling interval should be long enough that the expected number of pulses will not exceed the logger’s per-interval limit, but short enough to preserve meaningful time resolution. In practice, many users start with a conservative interval, review early data, and then adjust once actual pulse rates are known.

What happens if pulses arrive faster than expected?

If more than 4,095 pulses occur during a sampling interval, the logger records the maximum value for that interval. This does not damage the logger, but it does indicate that the sampling interval should be shortened or the application reconsidered.

Can I use the SRP-9 with sensors that generate power?

Yes — but only if the output meets the logger’s voltage and pulse-width requirements. The SRP-9 is designed for logic-level pulse signals and dry contacts, not for directly powering sensors. When in doubt, confirm signal characteristics before connecting.

Is the SRP-9 better suited to mechanical switches or electronic sensors?

It works well with both, but each has trade-offs. Mechanical switches are simple and robust but produce slower pulses. Electronic sensors can generate much faster pulses, which may require careful selection of input mode and sampling interval to avoid exceeding count limits.

Why doesn’t the SRP-9 record switch state?

The SRP-9 is optimized for counting events, not tracking on/off status. This design choice reduces memory usage and power consumption, allowing longer deployments. Applications that require state tracking are better served by loggers designed specifically for that purpose.

Can the SRP-9 be used to calculate RPM or flow rate directly?

The logger records pulse counts per interval. RPM, flow rate, or frequency are typically calculated after data download, using known scaling factors. This approach provides flexibility but assumes the user understands how the sensor translates pulses into real-world units.

Is traffic counting a good use case?

It can be, provided the application focuses on traffic volume and patterns, not speed or vehicle classification. The SRP-9 is commonly used where each vehicle generates one or more pulses and where traffic levels are moderate and predictable.

How do users typically verify their setup before deployment?

Most users connect their sensor and observe real-time counts in TrendReader while generating known pulses. This confirms wiring, signal polarity, and pulse detection before leaving the logger unattended.

Is the SmartReader Plus 9 suitable for tipping-bucket rain gauges?

Yes. The SRP-9 is well suited for tipping-bucket rain gauges that generate a contact closure or pulse for each bucket tip. Each tip is recorded as a discrete event, allowing rainfall totals and intensity trends to be calculated after data download

Calibration

Data loggers are often used in highly regulated environments such as food and pharmaceutical production and storage where strict safety regulations apply. Regulatory agencies generally require proof of calibration.

ACR calibrations are performed using reference standards that have been calibrated and are traceable to the US National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). This ensures that all ACR data loggers meet, and perform to, their published specifications, allowing you to be confident that they will assist you in achieving your compliance requirements.

Calibration certificates are provided with every calibration we perform. ACR Systems is an ISO 9001:2015 registered company and calibration records are kept as part of our quality system and can be made available for customer audits.
