PowerWatch® Voltage Disturbance Logger

Event-based power quality insight—no wiring, probes, or specialized installation required

PowerWatch is a compact, plug-in voltage disturbance recorder/logger designed to identify and document common power quality issues in single-phase electrical systems. It captures time-stamped voltage events—including sags, swells (overvoltage events), outages, impulses, and frequency variations—so you can see exactly when problems occur and how often they repeat.

Unlike full power quality analyzers, PowerWatch focuses on event detection rather than continuous waveform recording. This makes it a practical first-line diagnostic tool for investigating suspected power issues, validating complaints, and deciding whether further analysis or corrective action is warranted—without wiring, probes, or specialist installation.

How PowerWatch Is Used

Practical power diagnostics for real-world electrical questions

PowerWatch is designed for situations where electrical problems are suspected but difficult to confirm. Instead of continuously recording waveforms, PowerWatch captures time-stamped voltage disturbance events, providing clear evidence of when issues occur and how frequently they repeat.

This makes PowerWatch especially effective as a first-line diagnostic tool, helping determine whether power quality issues may be contributing to equipment behavior such as nuisance trips, resets, or unexplained failures.

Typical Use Cases

  • Verifying suspected voltage sags or outages
  • Investigating intermittent resets or equipment faults
  • Documenting utility-side or facility-side power disturbances
  • Supporting troubleshooting without installing complex instrumentation
  • Deciding whether deeper power quality analysis is warranted

Where PowerWatch Fits

Unlike full power quality analyzers, PowerWatch focuses on event detection rather than continuous waveform capture. This reduces setup complexity, cost, and interpretation time—while still delivering actionable insight for many common power quality questions.

General & Intended Use

What is PowerWatch designed to do?

PowerWatch is an event-based voltage disturbance recorder used to identify and document common power disturbances in single-phase electrical systems. It records time-stamped events such as voltage sags, surges, outages, impulses, and frequency variations to help confirm when problems occur.

Are voltage disturbances normal?

Yes. Most electrical systems experience small voltage disturbances every day. These events are often brief and go unnoticed, but they can still affect sensitive equipment over time. The goal is not to eliminate every disturbance, but to understand when, how often, and under what conditions they occur.

Are these voltage events dangerous?

Most voltage disturbances are not dangerous on their own. Problems arise when disturbances are frequent, severe, or coincide with sensitive equipment or critical processes. Monitoring helps determine whether action is needed.

Why don’t I notice most power disturbances?

Many disturbances occur too quickly for lights or appliances to react. However, sensitive electronics such as computers, controls, and power supplies may still be affected, even when no obvious symptoms are visible.

When should I be concerned about power disturbances?

Concern is warranted when you experience unexplained equipment resets, failures, shortened equipment life, or inconsistent operation. Repeated disturbances or patterns tied to specific times or loads are often worth investigating.

Is PowerWatch a full power quality analyzer?

No. PowerWatch is not a full power quality analyzer and does not perform continuous waveform capture, harmonic analysis, or compliance testing. It is intended as a practical diagnostic tool to confirm suspected issues and determine whether more detailed analysis is needed.

When would someone typically use PowerWatch?

PowerWatch is commonly used when power-related problems are suspected but intermittent or difficult to prove. Typical use cases include troubleshooting equipment resets, validating customer complaints, documenting outages or voltage sags, and gathering evidence before deploying more advanced instrumentation.

Measurements & Recording

What types of events does PowerWatch record?

PowerWatch records voltage sags, surges, outages, impulses, and frequency variations based on user-defined threshold settings.

Does PowerWatch continuously record voltage waveforms?

No. PowerWatch uses threshold-based, event-driven recording rather than continuous waveform capture. This allows it to focus on meaningful disturbances without generating large volumes of data.

Are recorded events time-stamped?

Yes. All recorded events are time-stamped, allowing users to correlate disturbances with equipment behavior or reported incidents.

How many events can PowerWatch store?

PowerWatch can store up to 4,000 events in non-volatile memory.

Voltage Event Definitions

What is a voltage sag?

A voltage sag (also called a voltage dip in IEC standards) is a temporary reduction in RMS voltage, typically lasting from one half cycle up to one minute.

Voltage sags commonly occur when large electrical loads—such as motors, HVAC systems, compressors, or elevators—start or change operating state. While sags are often brief and expected in many facilities, they can cause sensitive electronics to reset, malfunction, or shut down.

PowerWatch records a sag event when the measured voltage falls below a user-defined threshold for longer than one full cycle.

What is a voltage surge (or swell)?

In power quality standards such as IEEE 1159 and IEC 61000, a voltage swell is defined as a temporary increase in RMS voltage above normal operating levels, lasting from one half cycle up to one minute.

PowerWatch records these events when the measured voltage exceeds a user-defined threshold for longer than one full cycle. In PowerWatch documentation and software, these events are labeled as surge events, but they correspond to voltage swells as defined by IEEE and IEC standards.

Repeated swells can stress power supplies, increase thermal loading, and reduce long-term equipment reliability, making documentation of these events important for troubleshooting and power quality assessment.

What is an impulse or spike?

An impulse is a very fast, high-voltage spike lasting only microseconds. These events are typically invisible to users but can be stressful to electronic components. Impulses are often caused by switching inductive loads or nearby lightning activity.

What counts as an outage?

An outage is a complete loss of voltage, even if it lasts only a fraction of a second. Momentary outages are common and often originate from utility switching or protective devices. Frequent outages, however, may point to wiring or supply issues that deserve investigation.

What are frequency variations?

Frequency variations are small changes around the nominal 50 or 60 Hz power frequency. Minor variations are normal in most grids, but larger or repeated deviations can indicate power stability issues, especially in generator-based or isolated systems.

Installation & Operation

How is PowerWatch installed?

PowerWatch is installed by plugging it directly into a wall outlet or monitored circuit. No external sensors or wiring are required.

Do I need an electrician to install PowerWatch?

No. PowerWatch plugs directly into a standard electrical outlet and does not require wiring, current probes, voltage leads, or panel access. Many users use PowerWatch to gather preliminary power quality information, which can help determine whether engaging an electrician or conducting further investigation is appropriate.

Is PowerWatch self-powered?

Yes. PowerWatch is powered from the monitored electrical circuit and includes an internal battery to retain event data and maintain timekeeping.

Is there any indication when events are recorded?

Yes. A front-panel LED flashes to indicate when events have been logged.

Software & Data Access

What software is used with PowerWatch?

PowerWatch is configured and read using ACR EventReader™ Software, which runs on Microsoft Windows.

How is data transferred to a computer?

Data is transferred using an optical interface cable, which provides full electrical isolation between PowerWatch and the computer for safe operation.

What type of reports are available?

EventReader provides summary views as well as detailed event reports that can be reviewed, saved, or printed for documentation purposes.

Electrical Compatibility

What voltage systems does PowerWatch support?

PowerWatch is available in region-specific models designed for common single-phase mains voltages. Functionality is the same across models; only nominal voltage and plug style differ.

Does PowerWatch monitor neutral-to-ground disturbances?

Yes. PowerWatch monitors both hot-to-neutral and neutral-to-ground disturbances.

Limitations & Expectations

Can PowerWatch measure harmonics or total harmonic distortion (THD)?

No. PowerWatch does not measure harmonics or THD and should not be used for harmonic analysis or power quality compliance testing.

Is PowerWatch suitable for compliance or standards-based power quality audits?

No. PowerWatch is intended for diagnostic and troubleshooting applications rather than formal power quality compliance audits.

International Use & Documentation

Is PowerWatch documentation available in other languages?

Official documentation is provided in English. However, when viewed in a web browser, the online help can be translated using built-in browser translation tools, which may be helpful for international users.

Where can I find the latest software and documentation?

The latest versions of EventReader software and PowerWatch documentation are available on the ACR Systems website.

Troubleshooting, Service, and Support

What should I do if I need help selecting or using PowerWatch?

If you’re unsure whether PowerWatch is suitable for your application, or if you need assistance with setup or interpretation of results, contact ACR Systems using the form below for application guidance. Or you can open a support ticket by visiting acrdatasolutions.com/support

Why are PowerWatch time stamps invalid after a prolonged period of time?

To eliminate this issue, the PowerWatch VDR must be cleared of data at least once every four years.

What does the “Loss of Synchronization” error in PW mean?

PowerWatch is half cycle integrated so it synchronizes itself to the consecutive positive and negative zero voltage crossings of the sinusoidal AC line signal. If the AC waveform is so distorted or noisy that multiple zero crossings are detected, the PowerWatch reports loss of synchronization. For 60 Hz, zero crossings should occur regularly every 8.33 msec. For 50Hz, zero crossings should occur regularly every 10 msec.

What does the “ERROR ###” message recorded in a PW indicate?

The PowerWatch could be malfunctioning. This can be verified by having the PowerWatch monitor a good known AC source to see if the errors show up again. If the errors repeat on a clean AC source, or the maximum of 4000 events are logged in a short period of time, the logger is likely malfunctioning and needs to be sent in for service. Example: Error 152

Can I download data from PW when it is not plugged in?

More recent versions of PowerWatch Software (version 1.29a and above) and all versions of EventReader Software will not allow you to download data from the PowerWatch unless it is plugged into a power source.

How can the battery life in a PW be conserved?

Simply leave the unit plugged in when it is not in use.
